What Our Guests Say
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. We came to further connect with our Hatfield family roots and explore the rich history of Matewan and the surrounding area. Staying at the Matewan House really added to the experience. The owners are very helpful and gracious and made sure we had everything we need. The building itself is historic and has a lot of character. Sitting on the porch rocking chairs during a rain storm as the coal trains passed by made for a wonderful, authentic experience. The rooms are nice and very clean, and the downstairs open area and dining tables provide a pleasant place to hang out during free time. Free snacks and drinks are provided as well. We will definitely stay here again when we are in the area.
We had our large group from Michigan stay here and took up quite a bit of space in the house, and this bed & breakfast accommodated us wonderfully! The breakfast each morning was fantastic, and the on-site amenities made our stay incredibly convenient—ice available on-site, buggy parking, a hose for cleaning off the buggies, fresh towels, and access to a washer and dryer were all huge perks. There was plenty of space for our euchre nights, and the proximity to parking made everything easy for our group. Most importantly, the hospitality from both the owners and staff was absolutely top-notch. They made us feel welcome from start to finish. Highly recommend for anyone traveling with a group—especially if you’re looking for comfort, convenience, and outstanding service! The Achy Breaky crew will be returning soon!
Great spot in the middle of this historic little town. Owners/operators super friendly and are happy to share history of Hatfields and the town lore. We rented several rooms. Some were recently rennovated and others are scheduled for rennovation. Mountain Room was awesome. They also served a great country breakfast served every morning. We had full run of the place between about 5pm and 7am. Free snacks, soda (pop) abd water. They also have locking storage for bikes and a wash down area. Train runs right behind the hotel approx every 2 hours, but you get acclimated to it after the first few passes.
We absolutely enjoyed our stay here. Talk about being treated like family!! Ellen makes the best biscuits and hand pies we've ever had. All in all just a beautiful experience. Thank you for the hospitality!!
We absolutely loved our stay at the Historic Matewan House! The accommodations were incredibly comforting — the kind of place that immediately makes you feel relaxed and at home. A huge thank-you to the owners for being so accommodating and allowing us a late entry. Their kindness truly set the tone for our stay. The homemade breakfast bar was delicious and the perfect way to start the morning. You can really tell how much care goes into every detail. And the home itself is simply beautiful. The historic charm, the character in every room, and the way the property has been maintained all make it a unique and memorable place to stay. Highly recommend to anyone visiting the area. We will definitely be back!
We have stayed here twice now and both times we were not disappointed! The people were super friendly, food was good and rooms were Super Clean! The location is great with a trailhead right by the house and several places to eat.
Ellen Hatfield and her staff were wonderful! They were welcoming and made you feel like you were home. The breakfast was plentiful and delicious, as were the unlimited snacks and the room was clean and comfortable. They also provided me with a lot of historic info as my family was from Matewan. The surrounding neighbors, shops and museums were great as well…lots of rich history in this little town!!!
We enjoyed the lovely, comforting hospitality at The Historic Matewan House during late July. Charming house filled with attentive features and marvelous hosting. The breakfast is divine! So are the snacks, drinks, comfortable lounging and outdoor areas. That front porch is a fabulous perch for watching the coming and goings in town. Our back deck made for fun train watching! The early morning trains with all their lights was a real favorite for my husband! We even got to park our rides inside a trim, secure parking area just beneath our deck. If you plan to visit Matewan, use the trail system, or just soak up the vibes, choose The Historic Matewan House and support LOCAL business and the best of true Appalachia. Skip the conglomerate, outside ownership accommodations and stick to what's real. You will not regret it.
We were just there last weekend with our group of 18 people. The staff were the best from anywhere we have been. This place has all the amenities you could ask for. They are the nicest people you could ask for. Great location for buggy riding. Easy access to Buffalo mountain and Devils Anse trails.
Our 4th time in 3yrs staying here with Ellen and her wonderful staff. Extremely warm and inviting place, along with great food, service, and hospitality. Great rates considering all you’re offered here in accommodations. Highly recommend this above any others - and this is the ONLY place we’ve ever stayed while riding our dirt bikes on the trails! This place is absolutely fantastic. If your looking for a small town this is the spot. The whole area is full of American history from the coal mining industry and the location of the famous Hatfield and McCoy fued. The road it was on was quite and had a few shops and restaurants which was very convenient not to mention the delicious breakfast included and the complimentary drinks and snacks and the friendliness of everyone around would highly recommend.
